Brighton Festival Children's Parade

One of Same Sky's flagship events in Brighton, this carnival parade brings together over 4000 children from nurseries, primary and secondary schools across the city in a vibrant explosion of colour and sound. This year's theme is Children's Games, so look out for all your old favourites....

A childrens multi-faith parade resulting from an artist residency programme in local schools will leave Memorial Garden going to West Green Playing Fields. The parade will be followed by a programme of activities in the field, including martial arts demonstrations, volleyball, wandering entertainers, food and music.

We have been supporting local individuals, groups and businesses to create a variety of fabulous carnival costumes, floats and walking tableaux for the parade. This year the theme is Pride Around the World so expect colourful creations from all your favourite destinations.

Foundation Degree in Street Arts Performance
University of Brighton in partnership with City College, Brighton and Hove
As part of this new degree course, Same Sky will be delivering two modules: Developing design and making skills for street arts performance, and Community and outreach work. The design and making module takes place in the first term of the first year and students will create a piece of work to participate in the Burning the Clocks event. Students interested in signing up for this two year course should contact University of Brighton for more information.

Legend of the Giant - Equinox

For the fourth year, Same Sky will be working across Mid Sussex as part of the Arts Gigantic Festival. We will be hosting artist residencies at Wakehurst Place and Nymans from Friday 1 to Sunday 17 August - you can see the artist at work creating a giant Summer Queen and Autumn King from 11am-5pm each day (except Mondays and Tuesdays). If you would like to participate, there will be drop-in workshops at each garden from 2-4pm each day (except Mondays and Tuesdays).

The Summer Queen and Autumn King will be coming together for their wedding celebrations at Hickstead as the closing show of the Sussex Games. This free event will include a participants parade, followed by the ceremony and fireworks.

Children from six local primary schools will be parading around the park in front of the church with items based on a theme of 'East'. The parade items will then be walked into the church and become decor for the Schools Concert of World Sacred Music.

The new hospital for children and adolescent mental health services will be hosting and open day that will highlight their new facilities. Same Sky will be working with service users to create a variety of sculptures, artworks and celebratory activities. We will also be creating a light box installation for the new hospital. During the open day, there will drop-in workshops for the public as well as the opportunity to see the new premises.

Burning the Clocks
6:30pmParading through Brighton city centre to Madeira Drive finale site
Burning the Clocks acts as an antidote to the excesses of a commercial Christmas - people gather together to make paper and willow lanterns to carry through their city and burn on the beach as a token for the end of the year. No lantern is better for its purpose than any other, all are unique to the maker and precious but all are given up to be burnt to greet the lengthening days.

This year the event will be the culmination of our 21st birthday year, and we will be creating the major clocks of Brighton and Hove to celebrate our time in the city. Find out more about the event from 1 October at the Burning the Clocks website below.....

Chinese New Year
time to be confirmedParading from Pavilion Gardens to Jubilee Square, Brighton
Local schools will undertake workshops to create traditional Chinese lanterns for the parade. Community groups will create new year banners inspired by Chinese arts and culture (from calligraphy to tai chi) to decorate the parade route. Chinese and British artists will collaborate to make a centrepiece lantern celebrating the year of the Bull. There will be drop-in workshops in the Corn Exchange for families to make lanterns and join the parade. The parade will culminate in a performance of traditional dragon and lion dancers with firecrackers.
