Following a very successful pilot course funded by SEA, Same Sky moved on to secure funding for a two-year programme of ESF/Learning and Skills Council funded Celebratory Arts Courses. These courses respond to concerns over the lack of vocational training in the arts sector by addressing the needs of both existing artists, wishing to apply their fine arts practice in community contexts, and new entrants wishing to gain a broad understanding of the field. Combining theory with a strong practical base the courses were linked to existing large scale projects (Burning the Clocks and The Children’s Parade), giving students direct “real time” experience working alongside and mentored by the artists on those projects.
Same Sky training courses are devised to foster creativity in art, performance, and music not only an end in itself but also as a means to develop various key skills including: working in groups, solving problems and as a platform to access further learning. Continuing support allows participants to continue their creative development after the end of the formal course. Further training courses were developed as part of the Same Sky`s eb4U arts programme which had far reaching results for its participants who have since set themselves up as an independent arts group.
Alongside these, tailor made courses have been developed for particular projects. The recent Nottingham Fallas training course looked in more detail at specific design and build skills, project and production management and running community workshops. Ongoing independent and internal evaluation helps us to fine tune these courses and shows both the high standards achieved and the needs of arts practitioners and new entrants for an increased range of training provision. We will use the data and experiences gathered to seek further funding to expand the scope of the courses and to address the needs of more advanced students.
